Canned mushrooms are a great thing to have in the store cupboard, as they are such a versatile food to throw into almost any savory dish. However, there may be times you open a can and don’t use them all up. In this case, you will be wondering how long the mushrooms will last, and how you can prolong their life. Nobody wants to waste food after all.

If you’re wondering if canned mushrooms can be frozen, the answer is yes, you can very easily freeze canned mushrooms! Read on to learn our simple tips for freezing canned mushrooms.

Are Canned Mushrooms Good After Being Frozen?

The mushrooms will still be good, but do consider that the texture will have changed, and the mushrooms will have become softer. Therefore, they are best used in cooked dishes such as casseroles, soups, sauces, and my favorite dish of all time, lasagne. 

A quick note: I’d recommend never freezing them as a closed can. Doing so will put the glass or tins under pressure, and they may explode when the contents inside them freeze and expand. 

What Is The Best Way to Freeze Canned Mushrooms?

Freezing canned mushrooms is ridiculously simple. 

  1. Just transfer your leftover mushrooms to a freezer-safe bag or airtight container.
  2. Note down the date, to keep track.
  3. Try and squeeze out any air before popping it in the freezer, as this will help prevent freezer burn.
  4. If you have large amounts of leftover mushrooms, divide them into recipe-sized portions for easy use later on.

How Long Do Canned Mushrooms Last In The Freezer?

They can usually be frozen for up to two months without any change to their texture. But it is important that the freezer has a minimum temperatur 0°.

How Do You Defrost or Thaw Canned Mushrooms?

Mushrooms can be defrosted in various ways. Here are some tips:

  1. Refrigerator: Just put them in the refrigerator overnight and you are good to go. This is the most gentle method.
  2. If you want to speed up the process put them in a bowl with cold water.
  3. The fastest way is to use the defrost function on your microwave.
  4. Depending on the dish, you don’t always have to thaw them before cooking. They naturally contain quite a bit of water, so the tiny bit of ice won’t make a big difference.

Canned mushrooms can be enjoyed in dishes such as lasagne, stroganoff, soups, sauces, stews, chili, rice, and pasta dishes.

Can I Still Use Canned Mushrooms Once They Have Passed The Expiration Date On The Package?

Yes, you absolutely can. Packages will typically carry a “Best Before,” “Best if Used By,” or “Best By” date. However, this is not a safety date but merely the manufacturer’s estimation of how long the mushrooms will remain at their best quality. 
Before using these mushrooms, do a quick check to ensure that the packaging or the can is not damaged and that there is nothing that points to potential spoilage.

How Can I Tell If Mushrooms Are Spoiled?

You can detect signs of spoilage by paying close attention to the look and smell of the mushrooms. If you can detect an off odor, a difference in the appearance or flavor, or even mold — it is best to throw the mushrooms out.

Don’t forget to also check the quality of the packaging of unopened canned mushrooms before use. If the packaging or tin displays any sign of damage, it needs to be disposed of. For example, if the tin leaks,  is bulging, dented, or rusting. 

Can You Refreeze Frozen Mushrooms?

You should never refreeze any kind of food that has been defrosted. On top of being a potential health hazard, the overall quality and texture of the mushroom will also be affected even more. 

What’s The Best Way To Store Unopened Tins Or Bottles Of Mushrooms?

Tins or bottles of mushrooms stored under the right conditions will stay at the best quality for three to five years. Store these unopened mushrooms in a cool, dry place away from places where the temperature can change or where they can be exposed to direct sunlight.

Can You Freeze Mushrooms and Peppers?

Like mushrooms, peppers can be frozen perfectly well. However, when freezing mushrooms and peppers together, don’t forget to date the bag as bell peppers, for example, can be frozen for ten to twelve months if stored under the right conditions.
